Grand Design – Hillcot Barn 5/5

Hillcott barn, jostles in an exciting way, with conservation heritage. Located in a remote valley of Herefordshire it is a mouthwatering example of contemporary residential design.

The program exposes the pitfalls of self project management. RRA Architects believe that self-build project management is fraught with complexity and shouldn’t be attempted without professional guidance through out the entire project.

This episode of Grand Designs, first released by Channel 4 in April 2006 highlights in bucket-loads, how client optimism mixed with reality are not necessarily happy bed fellows. The end result after much blood, sweat and tears is a fantastic barn conversion described by Ken McCloud as, ” a mouthwatering contemporary barn conversion.”

The program maker Talkback Thames submitted this episode of Grand Designs for a Golden Montreux TV award in 2006.

stupid fuking …
stupid fuking bitch, cant accept failure, cant accept that she was wrong and that she should never have project managed what was already an ambitious build to begin with. always blaming the architect and builders for she didnt understand, shuda off and let them do their job. she doesn’t deserve this gaf!

I think the woman …
I think the woman is OK. The architect doesnt seem to want to do anything outside his pay agreement, which is pretty poor form. Not even some constructive advice. Also, you can see how teh strict heritage laws in that area have actually helped create better architecture. n the end though, teh spaces in teh house are too cramped! And those red dining room chairs! Nope!

Aye, a beautiful …
Aye, a beautiful house. Well jelous!
What an annoying woman though! :P Wish I had the money for such a great house!

A typical vanity …
A typical vanity project, by people who think they’re entitled to an uninterrupted view across countryside.

Wow that did turn …
Wow that did turn out well even though I’m not a big fan of their home and even though they struggled with some major challenges it all came together for them in the end. Good on them. It did however highlight the importance of project management, communication etc etc.

Love this episodes …
Love this episodes for all the drama.
The reason this lady is so hard on the builders and architect is because they are obviously very wealthy. That’s how rich people stay rich.
Not the type of person to supply a cuppa and bicky for smoko.

i think the house …
i think the house has turned out well, allthough one thing i truly dislike is the central window design, for even though there is a beautiful veiw, it is intereupted by the great big chunks of steel in the window frames, i think a simpler more open flat centre window would have been better, i really like the finish on the old timbers and the stone wall, coupled with the channels of lighting at the base of the wall. one thing though, id never have her project manage. ever.

I’d rather project …
I’d rather project manage a build where my clients were Pol Pot and Robert Mugabe than have anything to do with that woman, the aesthetics were nice but I can’t help but wonder about the structural stability of the building.
It’s amazing the amount of people that do not employ a project manager or have the architect working on a full time basis, when will they learn.

They seem like the …
They seem like the sort of people who will never admit fault. If something goes wrong they relate it as though it was intended, or of no consequence. Like the budget being over 400,000, which is the same as the rejected initial quote and which is 150+ thousand over what they intended to spend, but she says “I think that’s good.”

Joomington September 2nd, 2010 at 12:02 pm

Well, despite that …
Well, despite that woman’s best efforts the building turned out nicely after all. Kudos to the architect and the builders, not so much to the project manager.

candofitness September 2nd, 2010 at 12:02 pm

Under 400000 same …
Under 400000 same as first quote and she thinks it is good so why didn’t she accept the first quote?

I love this program …
I love this program, it teaches you a lot about PROJECT MANAGEMENT.
It reflects precisely what are the key points and challenges which a project manager faces.
I mean, the episode teaches a lot about management
