Band Promotion Basics – Logo Design

The 21st century internet generation has initiated a “changing of the guard,” so to speak, and has brought individuals out from behind the wall of obscurity and into the limelight. With major record labels taking the backseat to numerous independent artists and musicians, bands are finding that they can do a lot of things themselves, tasks that used to be reserved solely for record companies.
Today, bands have to do a lot of their promoting themselves if they wish to gain popularity among fans. A common and proven method for establishing a presence as a band within the music community is to design a logo.
Distinction
———————————————————————
The “Nine Inch Nails” logo is extremely distinct. It is made up of the letters “N,” “I” and “N,” which are simply the band’s initials. However, the last “N” is reversed like it is a mirrored image. This makes the entire logo symmetrical. Symmetry is important in this case because it makes the logo stand out and easy to identify. The logo is also a rectangle, which is an extremely simple shape. The symmetry lends to the simplicity of the image, and the mind can easily wrap itself around such a simple shape.
Psychology of Shapes and Colors

Shapes may not seem like such a big deal, but the way a line curves or remains straight can trigger certain sub-conscious associations and connotations. When we are presented with a rounded shape like a circle, the human mind can often trigger an emotionally-based thought. A lot of the psychology behind shapes is rooted in the recognized roles between opposite sexes and culture. Rings are a symbolic shape and can represent love, marriage, relationships and “togetherness.” Rounded shapes can convey messages of friendship, care and support, and are often useful in designs relating to communities. Angular shapes like triangles, squares and rectangles can represent balance and stability. They can convey structure, organization and efficiency. They sort of have the opposite effect of rounded and circular shapes, conveying rationale and logic rather than feelings and emotions. Lines can also be used differently. The human mind tends to associate a curved line with femininity, perhaps implying smoothness, gentleness and grace, whereas straight and jagged lines tend to elicit a more masculine response of power, aggression and action.When we’re growing up, certain colors stand out. Beginning at an early age, we begin remembering colors and more easily recognize them and their associations for us. The use of color may or may not be immediately evident to us on a conscious level, but color has a powerful effect on the human mind. Bright colors can grab one’s attention, perhaps conveying a sense of “loudness.” Colors like red and blue can be used according to the effect that is desired. Red can summon conflicting emotions, ranging from blood and warfare to love and passion, which can evoke thoughts of danger, which in turn can create a sense of urgency and can even stimulate circulation. Blues and greens, on the other hand, tend to be associated with peace and tranquility and can convey a calm and comforting tone, usually expressive of nature, harmony and the environment.
Faces and Attitude

The human face is an often overlooked yet powerful image. One of the first faces that we learn to recognize at an early age is that of our own mother. The eyes are one of the most expressive features of a human face, and we learn to recognize facial communication. We know if someone is angry, sad, happy or confused through nonverbal communicative cues via the human face. In the case of “Nine Inch Nails,” the NIN logo resembles an angry face, as Gene points out in the video. This anger fits the mood of many songs by “Nine Inch Nails.”

STORY:
Practicality, innovation and aesthetics meld into one at London’s Design Museum, where designers are vying to win the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2009. Among the entries is the Aquaduct bicycle.
It looks like an ordinary bike on the outside, with a large container on the back and one on the front fixed to the handlebars. But inside there are complex mechanics. The Aquaduct bike purifies water as it is peddled. The American company IDEO designed the bike. They envision people in rural Africa being able to use the bike to cycle to a water source, often several miles away from their village. And, as they peddle the long journey home, the water stored in a container on the back of the bike is pushed through a purifier and then stored in the plastic box on the front of the bike ready for safe drinking.
IDEO hopes to refine its concept to make it commercially viable for distribution across the developing world. Nina Due (pronounced: Dew-Ay) says more designers are entering the competition by incorporating practicality to their imaginative creations.

“Certainly with the Aquaduct I think it is a great example of looking at very practical and needy issues and coming up with simple solutions.”
Other entrants include the Armadillo Vet and Face Mask, made by Norway’s Kode Design. They wanted to create a suit for land mine clearers that is safer and more comfortable than ones traditionally worn. The face mask in particular has undergone a complete revamp, weighing fifty percent less and with a valve system that makes it easier to breath. Improving comfort and will improve concentration in the dangerous task of de-mining.

“This one has much better ventilation. It also has some goggles which are fitted much closer to the eyes, which therefore protect the eyes much better. The vest has been created to almost be a continuation of the mask, so the neck piece sort of overlaps the mask itself, which makes it, when you crouch down, much more safe as well.”
Eco-friendly is the buzz word these days, and the world of design is as immersed in green ideas as anyone else. Norway’s Th!nk City car, which is one hundred percent electric and can be completely recycled, is a contender for an award. Another “green” entry is a weird futuristic looking love-seat chair, made of recycled newspapers.
[Nina Due, Design Museum Curator]:
“I think the green issue within design has come a very long way. Even going back ten years we associated recycle design, for example, with cut off beer bottles turned into wine glasses and so forth, which often made it a very simplistic approach to what green design could be. Nowadays it is much more sophisticated.”
Up for best product award is the Senz umbrella from The Netherlands. It is the first aerodynamic umbrella in the world and promises never to turn itself inside out in strong winds. It has a longer tail at the back giving it not only the aerodynamic aspect, but also allowing the user to better see out the shorter front.
The final winner of the Brit Insurance Design Awards will be announced on March 18.
